Working in Somerset

A food county, a care sector and a lot of buildings that stay open

Somerset makes food at scale. Dairy, cheese and cider sit at the centre of the county's economy, and the processing, packing and staff catering that go with them run to standards well above a restaurant kitchen. Around that sit the towns: Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Frome, Wells, Street and Minehead, spread far enough apart that we survey properly on the first visit and price off it rather than making repeat trips.

The other half of our Somerset work is nothing to do with food. Care homes, supported housing, assisted bathrooms and staff washrooms all need the same thing for the same reason: a surface that takes daily disinfecting without failing at the joints. In a wet room that matters more than anywhere else, because the wall, the floor and the shower area are one continuous wet surface rather than three separate ones.

Almost none of these buildings can close. A care home is occupied seven days a week and a production line has a cleaning window, not a shutdown. Hygienic cladding is an overlay onto sound existing substrate, so it goes in without wet trades and without stripping back to brick, which is what lets us work one room or one section at a time.

Somerset is now covered by a single unitary authority. Somerset Council replaced the county council and its four districts in 2023, and inspects food businesses across the whole area under the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset are separate authorities and are not part of it.

Grey hygienic PVC wall cladding and coved safety vinyl flooring in an accessible wet room with level-access shower in Bridgwater, Somerset
Accessible wet room, Bridgwater. Hygienic wall cladding and coved safety vinyl.

Accessible wet room, Bridgwater

An accessible wet room in Bridgwater, lined in grey hygienic PVC sheet from floor to ceiling, with a level-access shower, grab rails and a fold-down seat. The safety vinyl floor falls to a central drain and is coved up the wall, so the whole room drains as one surface with no threshold and no skirting joint.

A room like this gets soaked several times a day and cleaned just as often. Tiled walls fail at the grout and sealed trays fail at the edges, and in an assisted bathroom a failed edge is a slip risk as well as a hygiene one.
